About Hanuman Chalisa

The Hanuman Chalisa (हनुमान चालीसा) is one of the most beloved and widely recited devotional hymns in Hinduism. Composed by the 16th-century saint-poet Tulsidas in the Awadhi dialect of Hindi, it consists of 40 verses (chalisa means “forty” in Hindi) praising the glory, valor, and divine qualities of Lord Hanuman.

Tulsidas is said to have composed the Hanuman Chalisa during a period of great personal difficulty — when the Mughal emperor Akbar had him imprisoned. According to legend, Tulsidas prayed to Lord Hanuman, and Hanuman sent an army of monkeys to create such chaos in Agra that Akbar was forced to release the saint. Upon his release, Tulsidas composed the Chalisa as an expression of gratitude and devotion.

📊 The 40 Verses at a Glance

The Hanuman Chalisa begins with 2 dohas (couplets), then has 40 chaupais (quatrains), followed by 1 final doha. Total: 43 verses. “Chalisa” refers to the 40 chaupais which form the main body of the hymn. It takes approximately 10–15 minutes to recite once.

Who Composed It and When?

The Hanuman Chalisa was composed by Goswami Tulsidas (1532–1623 CE), one of the greatest devotional poets in Hindu tradition. Tulsidas is also the author of the Ramcharitmanas — the Hindi retelling of the Ramayana that remains the most widely read religious text in North India.

Why Is It So Powerful?

The Hanuman Chalisa is considered one of the most accessible and powerful devotional hymns because:

  • It can be recited by anyone regardless of caste, gender, or spiritual advancement
  • It covers the complete story of Hanuman’s divine qualities in 40 verses
  • The metre and rhythm make it easy to memorize and chant
  • Hanuman is considered the most accessible deity — always ready to help sincere devotees
  • Regular recitation is believed to remove fear, negativity, and obstacles

  • For maximum benefit: 108 times (the Chalisa itself says 100 times breaks all bondages)

Best Times to Chant

  • Tuesday (Mangalvar): Most auspicious day for Hanuman worship
  • Saturday (Shanivar): Also considered sacred — Hanuman protects from Saturn’s malefic effects
  • Early morning: Before sunrise is ideal — brahma muhurta (90 minutes before dawn)
  • Evening: Just after sunset — lighting a lamp and reciting the Chalisa is a common household practice
  • Hanuman Jayanti: On Hanuman’s birthday (Chaitra Purnima), reciting the Chalisa 108 times is especially auspicious
💡 Practical Tip

Light a mustard oil or sesame oil lamp and offer red or orange flowers before reciting. Facing east or north while chanting is recommended. You do not need to memorize the entire Chalisa immediately — reading from text while listening to an audio recitation helps you learn naturally over time.
